Have you ever looked at a handmade card with beautiful gold or silver accents and wondered how they were created?
The new Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System makes it easy to add elegant metallic details to your handmade cards, scrapbook pages, gift tags, and more. Whether you’re brand new to hot foiling or simply curious about how it works, this guide will help you understand the basics before you get started.
As someone who loves creating simple, beautiful cards, I’m always excited to learn new techniques that add a special touch without making crafting feel overwhelming. While I’m still waiting for my own Hot Foil System to arrive, I’ve been learning everything I can so I can share it with you and make your first experience a little easier.
What Is the Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System?
The Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System uses heat and pressure to transfer beautiful metallic foil onto cardstock.
Unlike heat embossing, hot foiling creates crisp, shiny designs using specially designed Hot Foil Dies and foil. The result is a professional-looking finish that’s perfect for cards, scrapbook layouts, home décor, gift packaging, and so much more.
If you’ve admired elegant foiled designs in magazines or on handmade cards, you’ll love how easy this system makes it to create them yourself.

Before You Buy
I always want to be completely honest with my customers, so there’s one important thing I want you to know.
The Stampin’ Up! Hot Foil System requires the Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine and will NOT work with the retired Big Shot.
The Hot Foil Platform is wider than the opening of the Big Shot, so it simply won’t fit through the machine.
If you’re not sure which die-cutting machine you have, please don’t hesitate to reach out before ordering. I’d much rather answer your questions first than have you purchase something that isn’t compatible with your current setup.
How Does the Hot Foil System Work?
The process is easier than you might think.
The platform heats for approximately six minutes before you’re ready to begin.
Once heated, you’ll place your Hot Foil Die on the platform, add your foil and cardstock, build the correct sandwich, and run everything through your Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine.
When you peel away the foil, you’re left with beautiful metallic designs that instantly add elegance to your project.
Like any new technique, there are a few steps to remember, but after a few projects, it quickly becomes second nature.
I Created Something to Make It Even Easier
Whenever I’m learning something new, I love having a quick reference guide nearby instead of trying to remember every step.
That’s exactly why I created my Hot Foil System Reference Guide.
This free printable includes:
- The correct sandwich order
- Platform setup
- Helpful reminders
- Safety tips
- Quick-reference information you can keep right beside your machine
I designed it to help take the guesswork out of hot foiling so you can spend more time creating and less time wondering if you’ve forgotten a step.

My First Impressions
At the time I’m writing this post, my own Hot Foil System is still on its way to me.
As soon as I’ve had a chance to use it, I’ll come back and update this article with my own photos, favorite tips, things I learned, and a few beginner-friendly tricks that I discover along the way.
I always believe the best way to learn is together, and I’m looking forward to sharing that journey with you.
